Review of threat status list for NZ birds - submissions due 10 June 2012

In 2008, a panel of ornithologists assessed the conservation status of New Zealand birds against the NZ Threat Classification System. The results of this analysis were published in the September 2008 issue of Notornis (Vol 55: 117-135). The next revision of the threat status list for New Zealand birds is soon underway. Status will be assessed using the same criteria as used in 2008.

The 2012 OSNZ Conference and Annual General Meeting will be held in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, during Queens Birthday Weekend, 2nd - 4th June.
The Annual General Meeting is scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, June 2nd.

Garden Bird Survey 2012

The 2012 Garden Bird Survey starts on 30 June. You are invited to watch birds in your garden for one hour (just one hour) sometime between 30 June to 8 July, and for each species you encounter, record the highest number you see or hear at any one time. You don’t have to watch your whole garden, just part of the garden will do. You can even do the survey from the luxury of your kitchen or living room (some people have even done it from their bedroom), looking out the window at the garden.

NZ Journal of Zoology - Call for papers

The New Zealand Journal of Zoology is calling for papers for an upcoming special issue focussing on wind energy and wildlife, including effects on birds, particularly migratory and predatory species, effects on other animals, modelling and mitigation. For details click here.

Submissions of manuscripts up to 5,000 words can be made directly to the ScholarOne online portal.

Notornis 58 (3&4) has just been uploaded on our website. To see the articles click here. Please note - this is a combined issue of September and December 2011. Members will receive a hard copy in their letter box by the end of March.

Notornis 59 (1&2) will combine March and June 2012 - this issue will be available in June.
